From Hopelessness to Hope, Africa on the Rise
with
Hon. Tendai Biti, Minister of Finance, Government of Zimbabwe
The Honourable Tendai Biti is a lawyer who was the youngest partner ever at the Harare law firm, Honey and Blackenberg. As a practicing lawyer, he handled thousands of labour and human rights litigation, including successfully repealing section 6 of the Law and Order Maintenance Act (which does not allow anyone the right to demonstrate without police clearance) and various constitutional cases like those of Margaret Dongo and Ndabaningi Sithole. He is a founding member of Zimbabwe Lawyers For Human Rights and the National Constitutional Assembly. He also is a founding member of the Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) and crafted the “RESTART” – their economic blue print. He was elected MDC MP for Harare East Constituency in 2000 and has held that seat in the following two parliamentary elections. In 2005, he became the Secretary General of the MDC. He became Finance Minister in the Inclusive Government in February 2009 and remains in that cabinet position to the present.
