I am very pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. John Shepherd as Vice-Provost and Associate Vice-President (Academic). Dr. Shepherd, who has been in the role on an interim appointment since July 1, 2012, was the unanimous choice of the Search Committee and will now take on the position for a three-year term commencing July 1, 2013.

Dr. Shepherd is a Chancellor’s Professor of Music and Sociology, and a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada. He has over 30 years of research, teaching, and administrative experience. He was the founding Director of Carleton’s School for Studies in Art and Culture and has also served as the Chair of the Department of Sociology and Anthropology. From January 2007 until June 2012, Dr. Shepherd was Dean of the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Affairs, and, previously he has acted as Associate Dean in the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences and in the Faculty of Graduate Studies and Research. During his time as Dean of Graduate and Postdoctoral Affairs, Dr. Shepherd presided over a significant expansion of graduate studies at Carleton involving the development of a number of doctoral and master’s programs. In his capacity as Dean, Dr. Shepherd has acquired considerable experience in the standard and periodical appraisals of graduate programs by the Ontario Council on Graduate Studies. This background provided him with the perfect foundation to develop Carleton’s new academic quality assurance process, and so in 2010 Dr. Shepherd took on the role of Associate Provost for Academic Quality Assurance in addition to his responsibilities as Dean. After leading the development of Carleton’s Institutional Quality Assurance Process (IQAP) and its approval by the Ontario Universities Council on Quality Assurance, Dr. Shepherd was well placed to take on, in an interim capacity, the position of Vice-Provost and Associate Vice-President (Academic) which brought together a number of related academic responsibilities in the Office of the Provost.

Reporting to the Provost and Vice-President (Academic), the position of Vice-Provost and Associate Vice-President (Academic) oversees the Office of Quality Assurance (Academic Programs) and the operation of Carleton’s IQAP, program and curriculum development, and academic planning. During his interim appointment, Dr. Shepherd has taken a very proactive approach in ensuring that Carleton’s approach to quality assurance emphasises quality by providing the opportunity for academic units to improve the quality of the programs they offer. The Search Committee was very impressed with Dr. Shepherd’s outstanding record of achievement not only in his current position but in all of the academic and administrative positions that he has held at Carleton. As Dr. Shepherd says, “I have thoroughly enjoyed my career at Carleton, and I am delighted to now have the opportunity to serve in the position of Vice-Provost and Associate Vice-President (Academic)”.

A graduate of Carleton, Dr. Shepherd received a B.A. in French in 1970 and a B.Mus. in 1972 and in 1977 a D.Phil. in the sociology of music from the University of York in England. He also holds an Associateship of the Royal College of Music (ARCM) in the flute. Dr. Shepherd’s research interests include the sociology and aesthetics of music, popular music studies, theory and method in musicology, cultural studies, and the sociology of music education. He has lectured extensively on these subjects in North America, Europe, Australia, South America, and the Caribbean. I am truly delighted that Dr. Shepherd will be serving a full term as Vice-Provost and Associate Vice-President (Academic), and I look forward to working with him over the coming years.

I would like to thank the members of the Search Committee for their care and diligence in completing a successful search process.

Please join me in congratulating Dr. Shepherd on his appointment and wishing him all the best as Vice-Provost and Associate Vice-President (Academic).

Peter Ricketts
Provost and Vice-President (Academic)
