Abstract:

The vehicle ownership is increasing day-by-day with the population growth of Bangladesh. The traffic scenario is also changing along with this change. In the rapidly evolving world of transportation engineering, the modern roundabout is quickly gaining popularity as an alternative to a conventional intersection. The number of roundabouts in the U.S. has risen to roughly 3,700 over the last 20 years. Due to this rise in use, there has been a need to better understand the characteristics roundabouts have and how they affect the performance of transportation networks. Sustainability-related advantages of roundabouts are of particular interest. Roundabout has been widely adopted alternative as a type of intersection in many parts of the world due to its convenience for operation with lesser conflict points. Modern roundabouts are designed to control traffic flow at intersections without the use of stop signs or traffic signals. Roundabouts are received more attention increasingly due to the advantages of accident-decreasing and efficiency-increasing. The capacity of roundabout intersection is the important or we can say key parameter to check the performance of roundabout intersection. The capacity of the roadway roundabout depends on the flow at different legs approaching the roundabout. The performance of roundabouts in terms of queues, delays and saturation index typically depends on entry capacity. We surveyed several peak hours at selected intersection (which is the busiest intersection of Chittagong city) to count or measure the capacity of existing condition. This paper is an effort to evaluate new and existing roundabout safety and operational features such as signs and pavement markings and how they influence performance of drivers at multi-lane roundabouts. It evaluates a normal intersection as an alternative geometric design to a multi-lane roundabout. This paper discusses briefly about the possible benefits after the conversion of an intersection into roundabout. We also used the terms & conditions and followed different research scholars from various parts of the world to avoid our inadvertency which is briefly discussed in literature review chapter. This study will give us the benefit to find the intersections where authority should build more roundabouts.
