Abstract:
Pedestrian behavior plays an important role in analyzing the operations of unsignalized intersections and isolated crossings. With the increase of motor vehicles growth rate, there is an increase in the regulation of motor vehicles on the road, but the regulation of pedestrians is completely neglected. The city of Chittagong making the second-largest city in Bangladesh. Chittagong has a population of more than 2.5 million, by gender; the population was 54.36% male and 45.64% female. The main objectives of this study are to identify the general crossing behavior of pedestrians and find out the pedestrians’ perception of using road crossing facilities at the unsignalized intersection in Chittagong city under mixed traffic condition. A field survey was completed at Tiger-pass intersection in Chittagong city which has four approaches. All approaches are two way four lanes. Video observation and a questionnaire survey were conducted among the pedestrians who cross the studied area. 1516 pedestrians at Tiger pass intersection have been observed through video graphic method. From this observation, it is found that 68.99% of pedestrians at tiger pass intersection do not use existing road crossing facilities. Among them 60.92% male, 59.95% female at Tiger pass intersection do not use existing road crossing facilities. A questionnaire survey has been done on 1000 pedestrians. The reasons for pedestrians not to use road crossing facilities are lack of awareness (39.25%), time-consuming (35.00%), unsuitable locations (10%), etc. From scrutinizing the study, it would be proposed that roadside barriers must be constructed, and the median barrier should be improved to separate the pedestrian movements from vehicular traffic. As well as, construction of foot over bridge and the surrounding environment of the crosswalk should be improved along with people’s awareness.
