Carleton University currently has over 100 researchers within the Faculty of Engineering and Design (Civil and Environmental Engineering, Electronics, Systems and Computer Engineering, Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, and Information Technology) and the Faculty of Science (Computer Science, Cognitive Science) who are actively engaged in various aspects of advanced Information and Communications Technology (ICT) applications, including connected and autonomous vehicles.
From among all the many projects and research interests at the university, there are several areas of concentration emerging. These six main areas of particular interest to Carleton researchers are:
- Autonomous Operations (Examples: Guidance and Navigation; Machine Vision; Aerospace Mechanics and Materials; Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs).)
- Data Processing and Management (Examples: Data Processing, Analysis & Management; Artificial Intelligence; Neural Networks; Machine Learning.)
- Sensor Network Technologies (Examples: Sensors; Signal Processing; Environmental Monitoring.)
- Wireless Connectivity (Examples: Wireless technology; Mobile Communication; Smart Grids and Devices; the Internet of Things; Cloud Computing.)
- Cybersecurity (Examples: Cryptography; Authentication; Monitoring and Detection; Security; Privacy.)
- Software Engineering and Computational Linguistics (Examples: Software Requirements and Deployment; Coding and Information Theory; Algorithms; Optimization.)
- Road and Vehicle Safety (Examples: Transport Infrastructure; Safety; Emissions Monitoring and Control; Road and Driving Simulation.)
