After completing his undergraduate degree in Mechanical Engineering, Brock joined the Solar Energy System Laboratory at Carleton in 2015. He had been interested in buildings and energy since his first year and saw the opportunity to get involved in research as a natural next step.

He began working on his masters thesis under the supervision of Dr. Cynthia Cruikshank, publishing it in 2017. As Brock continues his education, his work with Cynthia inspired the direction of his research surrounding his PhD. Drawn to the passion and enthusiasm of Dr. Cruikshank and her team, Brock will continue to develop tangible solutions to retrofitting existing buildings.

Brock was brought on to the CABER team with the establishment of his research focus on the hygrothermal study of highly insulated new and retrofitted wall assemblies in Canada. His interest in the multifaceted field of building envelope systems, specifically how they impact the buildings mechanical systems and occupants, has lead the direction of his research toward analyzing the performance of Vacuum Insulation Panels. In order to determine which types of retrofits are ideal based on the location and age of the building.

He remains focused on the scientific factors of the walls assemblies and high performance insulation (e.g. vacuum insulation panels), but is interested in building integrated photovoltaic (BIPV), prefabricated buildings, as well net zero energy buildings/communities.
