Itzel Lopez-Carreon
M.A.Sc. Candidate
Degrees: | H.B.Sc. Chemistry (Ottawa U.) |
Itzel joined the CABER group in September 2023 for her M.A.Sc. in Materials Engineering with the Collaborative Specialization in Climate Change. Her research is focused on the durability and long-term performance of building envelope materials as determined through accelerated aging protocols and both chemical and physical material characterizations.
She completed her undergraduate studies (H.B.Sc.) in Chemistry at the University of Ottawa in 2020. Her professional experience includes 3 years working as a Technical Officer at the NRC’s Construction Research Centre, within the Façades, Systems, and Products (FSP) group. There, her main role has been to evaluate the performance of various construction and infrastructure materials by monitoring changes in key properties upon accelerated weathering.
As a member of the CABER team, Itzel is researching environmentally sustainable construction materials with a focus on bio-based insulation materials, as these materials show promise in reducing the embodied carbon of buildings and will help move Canada closer to our goal of Net Zero by 2050.
