Warren joined CABER as a Ph.D. student in Buildings Engineering, researching airflow and hygrothermal performance in building envelope systems. His research will involve integrating a gas-tracer system into the existing Guarded Hot Box apparatus, to provide a new way to examine how air moves through building envelope assemblies.  Critically, the convection of air through materials, joints, and cracks can transport heat and moisture between wall layers, potentially contributing to condensation and moisture-related durability risks such as mold growth and rotting of materials.

Warren’s research builds on his background in fluid mechanics. His Master’s research at the University of Saskatchewan focused on creeping flow around solid bodies, providing a strong foundation in fluid dynamics and transport phenomena. He is applying this expertise to the coupled movement of air, heat, and moisture through building envelopes, using experimental and modelling approaches to better understand and predict hygrothermal performance, particularly where convection may overtake diffusion as a transport mechanism.

Prior to joining CABER, Warren worked as a mechanical engineer in industry specializing in sustainable buildings, energy efficiency, and carbon capture technologies. His professional experience in building energy modelling and building performance provides a practical perspective that complements his research into building envelope performance and moisture durability.
