ENVE students win at PEO night
On Wednesday night, April 8, 2015 three environmental engineering students presented their capstone engineering project at the PEO student paper night, winning Best Environmental/Social Responsibility Talk.
Courtney Berquist, Alanna Brunskill, and Melanie Fillingham (supervised by Dr. Onita Basu) presented their work on “From Buckets to Rain Barrels – a water harvesting project in rural Tanzania”.
The students shared with the audience their experiences on developing an appropriate water harvesting project in a rural area with a limited access to technology.
The project focuses on facilitating the construction of a sand dam in the Longido Area of Tanzania, working with a local company (Safe Water Ceramics of East Africa) to develop a more compact clay filtration system to reduce costs to the local population, and a Water Hub located with collaboration with a local business in Tanzania and a Canadian NGO that will focus on individual storage and collection systems tied with agricultural development.
This is a multi-year project that will bring on new students to participate. If you wish to support this project in terms of student involvement please see the link here: https://futurefunder.carleton.ca/projects/from-buckets-to-rain-barrels-2-go/
