Babaoglu wins at CGS student competition

Yagmur Babaoglu, a Ph.D. student of Dr. Paul Simms, won second place in the Canadian Geotechnical Society (CGS)’s graduate student presentation competition in 2020. She has developed techniques to rapidly assess the effectiveness of treatments for dewatering and strengthening oil sands tailings deposits. These new techniques will increase the pace of innovation in tailings management, leading to faster reclamation of the tailings impoundments and restoration of the boreal forests in Northern Alberta. A virtual ceremony for the winners will be held later this year.
