In association with the Ambassadors of Sweden and Norway, the Carleton Initiative for Parliamentary and Diplomatic Engagement organized a panel and networking reception on the challenges facing Canada as it assumes the chair of the Arctic Council.
Panelists included Terry Audla, President of Inuit Tapiriit Kanatami (ITK); Mona Elisabeth Brøther, Ambassador of Norway; Bernard Funston, Chair of the Canadian Polar Commission; and Teppo Tauriainen, Ambassador of Sweden.
More than 135 Members of Parliament, staffers, Ambassadors and diplomats representing 20 countries, senior officials from government and NGOs, journalists and Carleton students and faculty attended the panel which was moderated by Dr. Christopher Burn, Professor and NSERC Northern Research Chair in Permafrost at the Department of Geography, Carleton University.
Dr. Malcolm Butler, Dean of the Faculty of Science, offered closing remarks.
The panel was held at the Government Conference Centre with the support of Ryan Leef, M.P. (Yukon); Dennis Bevington, M.P. (Western Arctic), Official Opposition critic for the Canadian Northern Economic Development Agency; and Dr. Carolyn Bennett, M.P. (St. Paul’s), Liberal critic for Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development and the Canadian Northern Economic Development Agency.
