Degrees:Bachelor of Arts Honours English with a concentration in Drama Studies, 2021 (Carleton University)

Rachel is a theatre creator, currently pursuing her Bachelor of Education at the University of Ottawa. Her cohort is specifically geared to help students learn how to practice and acquire language learning skills through second language education. She is passionate about live theatre, dance, and puppets.

The Carleton Drama Studies Concentration was able to help me see the endless possibilities when creating as an artist. The fantastic people running this program gave me as many opportunities as they could to teach theory and provide practical experience through varying techniques and technology. I could create improvised moments, perform plays with a team, and develop individual communication and presentation skills. This program was even able to allow me to collectively create a radio play with my peers during a time we couldn’t connect in person! They are constantly seeking out new facets of theatre for their students to explore and this has helped me acquire the knowledge to make theatre in different forms, as well as expand my imagination when it comes to the theatre I create.

One of the greatest parts that I took away from the program was the inspiration to be a dedicated educator. It is integral to the classroom that I can have the students interact and use language in both real and imaginary settings. Using what I’ve learned I found students benefit from the usage of drama techniques in the classroom to aid language acquisition. Having students perform language in a theatrical context allows for vibrancy and motivation when it comes to language learning and I’m so grateful to know how to implement that in my classroom. The professors in the program inspired me to become an educator. I strive to achieve the same quality that I had in their classes.

I was encouraged to create and experiment with analysis, as well as theatre creation. This patience and open attitude toward learning has helped shape my performance and ability. The encouragement provided me with many opportunities, such as performing in Sock’N’Buskin, Carleton’s student theatre community. I was able to act, direct, costume design, stagehand, website manage, and be a board member. I was able to get so much experience while making
important and lasting connections.

This program is a decision I’m very glad I made. I am still creating and making theatre while seeking professional development in the educational field. I was able to see how to mentor and provide feedback to reach professional quality work. The work ethic, standards, and vast opportunities have shaped the way I teach and continue to learn. I look forward to the next opportunity I have of using what I’ve learned.
