We use microbes to recover valuable materials from waste and solve environmental pollution

The Environmental Biogeochemistry and Biotechnology lab harnesses the power of microbial adaptations to contaminated habitats to support sustainable waste reclamation.

We combine analytical chemistry, microbiology, genomics, and environmental science to better understand how microbes can recover critical metals, break down persistent organic pollutants, and control the fate of contaminants in different environments.

We work on a range of systems, including electronic waste, landfills, petroleum extraction operations, wetlands, hydrothermal vents, and even the human gut. We use the discoveries from these projects to develop sustainable biotechnology that meets the needs of collaborators in the solid waste and natural resource sectors. We also work closely with partners at Environment and Climate Change Canada and Natural Resources Canada to translate our findings into policy guidance that improves environmental management.
