Title: How the UN Convention against Transnational Crime and the Protocols Thereto assist in combating illicit trafficking in the former Soviet Union and Eastern Europe

Description: The talk will discuss the problem of transnational organized crime and illicit trafficking globally, with an emphasis on the region of the former USSR and Eastern Europe, and focus on how the Convention and the Protocols, ratified by UN Member States, have proven instrumental in dealing with these problems.  In addition, the speaker will cite certain difficulties experienced in Eastern Europe and the former USSR in implementing the Convention and the Protocols and the relevant technical assistance provided to them by the United Nations.
