Summary

Municipalities provide stewardship of infrastructure and the natural environment through asset management plans. These plans are generally focused on service-based outcomes to meet strategic goals within an overall asset management framework. Because uncertainty exists with the potential impact of climate change effects on infrastructure performance, it is critically important to understand the current state of municipal readiness to address climate change effects, as well as the broader municipal needs, challenges and gaps (e.g. technical, financial, organizational factors) when addressing climate change. In this study these issues are addressed by engaging stakeholders, developing strategies for successful climate change integration within the asset management framework, and advancing tools, standards, and best practices that can be adapted by municipalities within risk-based sustainable infrastructure management practices. Application of this asset management framework will be highlighted through a case study where remote sensing and risk management are viewed as key enabling technologies.

Webinar: Are You Ready? Climate Change & Asset Management

Carleton University is exploring how rural Ontario municipalities can integrate climate change considerations within asset management practices. A webinar was held on May 30, 2018 (10-11:30AM) that provided an overview of preliminary results from the first phase of this study. At the end of the webinar we answered questions submitted by the online participants via e-mail.

Digital links are provided for the webinar presentation slides [2018 05 30 ND2015-270 Webinar], and webinar video, which is posted through the Carleton University YouTube channel.
