Duration: 60 minutes

Workshop Description

Presenting research in academia is typically understood as “giving a paper” at a conference. This means the speaker reads their paper to audience members who pose their questions once the reading is done. This workshop starts by emphasizing the importance of going beyond this format (whenever possible) before discussing a more engaging format for presenting research to both fellow academics and the broader public. Topics covered in this workshop include mistakes to avoid when presenting, four approaches to structuring a presentation, and responding effectively to questions about material presented.

Learning Outcomes

(1) List common mistake presenters make

(2) Identify effective approaches to structuring a presentation

(3) Describe effective ways to respond to questions posed by audience members
