Abstract

It’s field trip day! Join us at our next event, which will take us to Carleton University’s Advanced Cognitive Engineering (ACE) Laboratory. The ACE Lab is associated with the Visualization and Simulation (VSIM) Center and houses large-scale flight simulators, as well as an impressive array of fundamental simulation tools and technologies including motion platforms, motion cueing seats, and high fidelity flight control systems. During our visit, we will tour the lab, hear about exciting research, and have a chance to try out some of the virtual simulators. (Note: taking pictures or videos in the lab is prohibited).

Food and refreshments will be provided.

Presenter

Chris Herdman has been on the faculty at Carleton University since 1988 where he is currently a Professor of Cognitive Science and Psychology, as well as the Scientific Director of Carleton University’s Center for Visualization, Simulation and Modelling (VSIM). Furthermore, Dr. Herdman is the Head of the Advanced Cognitive Engineering (ACE) lab. His research is focused on the discovery and application of fundamental principles of human perception and cognition to the design, test and implementation of human-in-the-loop systems. Dr. Herdman’s research is interdisciplinary in nature and his team at the VSIM Center includes 80+ graduate students and 20 faculty from the human sciences, engineering and computer science.

Host

Anna-Lena Theus is a PhD student in the Department of Communications and Media Studies at Carleton University, and holds a M.A. in Human-Computer Interaction. Her research focuses on informing the development process of smart-city technologies through user-centered design approaches, as well as on social implications of artificial intelligence and human-computer interaction. Prior to her academic life, Anna lived in Germany where she was a sales and marketing professional at an international publishing company.
