Making Something out of Nothing: Wrongfully Convicted Mothers

(Online)

with Kelly Lauzon

Time: 9:30am – 11:30am

Overview: While the field of wrongful convictions has benefited from an increased interest in examining the factors that contribute to wrongful convictions, the voices of wrongfully convicted individuals are significantly missing from these studies. More notably, the voice of wrongfully convicted mothers is especially absent. These are harrowing experiences where the legal system shaped their identities as mothers to produce a wrongful conviction. By looking their cases, we can appreciate the manifold consequences of a wrongful conviction.

Lecture Biography: The idea of the justice system turning on the very people it is intended to protect is terrifying, yet all too often this is a reality. After hearing about one case of wrongful conviction in undergraduate studies, Kelly Lauzon’s passion was ignited, and set on a path to examine this issue more closely. Today, Kelly is a PhD candidate and contract instructor in the department of Law and Legal Studies at Carleton University. Kelly is also co-host and co-creator of the podcast Real Life Wrongs.
