Eddie Goldenberg, senior adviser to Jean Chrétien for thirty years, spoke to students in POLM 5905 about the former prime minister’s approach to leadership. Mr. Chrétien’s term as prime minister was characterized by a willingness to delegate to ministers, to senior public servants, and to staff members, while focussing on the overall direction of the government. Mr. Goldenberg illustrated the former prime minister’s style by discussing several specific cases, including the decision not to go to war in Iraq. Eddie Goldenberg is now partner and head of government affairs and public policy for the law firm Bennett Jones and is author of the best-selling book The Way it Works: Inside Ottawa.
