Stand With Asians Coalition (SWAC) Announces Co-Founder Doris Mah Accepts Burnaby’s Apology for Historic Discrimination Against Chinese Canadians

Doris Mah with Mayor Mike Hurley, City of Burnaby
Stand With Asians Coalition (SWAC) co-founder, Doris Mah, accepts the City of Burnaby’s Official Apology for its historic discrimination against people of Chinese descent. Mah and Stand With Asians Coalition contributed to the City’s reconciliation projects, such as the Rooted book. In February 2023, Burnaby City Council approved a process to review, acknowledge and apologize for its historic discrimination against people of Chinese descent, to advance reconciliation with the Chinese Canadian community.
I am deeply grateful to stand with Chinese Canadians in Burnaby as we receive the City’s official apology for its historic discrimination against people of Chinese descent. I am honoured to be included because of my work addressing anti-Asian racism, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic in Burnaby and across Canada. This apology marks an important milestone in recognition and reconciliation, strengthening our shared commitment to equity, equality, inclusion and justice. I look forward to continued efforts to honour Chinese Canadian history and reduce barriers for future generations.
