Since Covid, I had the ability to enroll in the Master of Political Management virtually. For years, I worked with MP Peter Julian in his constituency office. I only knew half of what an MP did. I had no idea the other half of his important role as an MP in Ottawa with respect to committee work and private members’ legislation.
I also saw a disconnect between the MP’s constituency and hill offices. The phrase “Ottawa bubble” is accurate because unless government and hill staffers understand the reality of average Canadians from coast to coast, policy decisions tend to be “Ottawa-centric”.
The Riddell Program has given me the perspective to understand how Ottawa works and how best to translate that into very common and simple language to communicate to our constituents. It also helped me bring the constituency perspective to MP Julian’s office.
