Matthew Burbidge began his career in the arts as an Art Preservationist and Picture Framer before transitioning to the public sector, where he quickly advanced into strategic communication and policy roles. From 2008 to 2012, he worked as a Policy Analyst and Expenditure Analyst at the Treasury Board of Canada Secretariat, providing critical support in federal expenditure policy. In 2012, he briefly served as a Special Assistant in the Office of the Prime Minister of Canada.
Matthew then moved into university administration as the Director of Major & Planned Gifts at the University of Alberta. Following this, he held influential roles as the Director of Civics for the Blackmud Creek Community League and as a Senior Outreach Officer for the Leader of the Official Opposition in Alberta. In 2015, he became the Director of Communications & Marketing at E4C, a non-profit dedicated to poverty reduction. From 2017 to 2020, he served as the Director of Communications & Marketing at the Excel Society, a leader in services for individuals with complex needs.
Matthew’s internal and external communications experience was further honed at Island Health, where he recently served in both clinical and corporate communications on Vancouver Island. In his roles, he managed regional initiatives, fostering collaborative relationships with primary care partners across British Columbia. His contributions were integral to aligning communications with broader healthcare objectives and improving patient-focused care in the region.
Matthew holds a Master of Public Administration from Queen’s University and a Master of Political Management from Carleton University. His foundational education includes a Bachelor of Communications & Culture (Honours) with a specialization in Canadian Studies from the University of Calgary.
