Community-Based Development of the SENSE-MD App to Manage Risk and Empower Older Drivers (SENSE-APP)

What is the SENSE-APP Project?

The SENSE-APP project builds on the foundation of the AiP-204-1 SENSE-MD project. SENSE-MD is developing algorithms to interpret driver data from car-based sensors and create a framework to communicate driver risk to end-users.

The SENSE-APP project focuses on developing a proof of concept and transitioning to a prototype application (app) that presents driving risk knowledge to older drivers in an accessible, user-friendly way.

What will the SENSE-APP Project Deliver?

SENSE-APP will provide older drivers with timely knowledge based on their actual driving risk for accidents. The app will serve as a crucial tool, enabling older drivers to take proactive steps to improve driving safety and to begin planning for changes associated with retiring from driving.

What are the SENSE-APP Activities?

The SENSE-APP project progresses in two key phases:

Phase 1: We create a proof of concept and initial wireframes to map out app functionality.

Phase 2: We develop an app prototype ready for pilot testing with older drivers to ensure usability and relevance to the project’s goals.

All work is conducted collaboratively with older drivers and stakeholders to ensure the app meets the unique needs of this user group.

How SENSE-APP Builds on SENSE-MD

SENSE-MD leverages data collected from vehicle sensors, processed through AI models, to create personalized driving insights. SENSE-APP extends this work, focusing on creating accessible, user-centred feedback that older drivers can use to improve their safety.

Step-by-Step Overview:

  1. Data Collection: Sensors in the vehicle collect driving behaviour data.
  2. AI-Driven Analysis: Data is processed on the SENSE-MD platform, generating risk models for each driver.
  3. Insight and Feedback Generation: Data insights are tailored to provide actionable information for drivers and support members.
  4. Empowering Decisions: Drivers and their safety teams can make informed choices based on detailed, personalized feedback.

Get Involved: Community and Stakeholder Engagement

We value the input of drivers, families, and professionals in shaping the SENSE-APP project. Whether you’re an older adult, a caregiver, or a professional in healthcare or senior services, your insights are vital to our research and development process.
