Autonomy of Future Space Missions

At the Autonomous Space Robotics and Mechatronics Laboratory (ASRoM-Lab) we develop concepts, algorithms, theories and methodologies for the long-term, reliable autonomy of the robotic and mechatronic systems that will be deployed in the next-generation space missions. We study the dynamics of such systems considering synergistic integration of mechanical, electrical and computer subsystems and design advanced guidance and control strategies to improve their long-term performance while working in hostile and unstructured outer space environment. Particularly, we offer innovative solutions to treat the off-nominal conditions in a space robotic operation, based on techniques in Geometric Mechanics and Control, and experimentally test them against realistic situations.
