It is my distinct honour to serve as Carleton’s Vice-Provost and Associate Vice-President (Academic) and I am privileged to be able to contribute to our community through this role.

We are living in a time of disruption that can feel at the same time hopeful and alarming. This office, its departments and its people have been and will continue to help faculty, instructors and students navigate these changes through adaptation and innovation while ensuring sound and inclusive academic practices.

In performing this role, I am excited to continue to lead Teaching and Learning Services (TLS) and to link it with the wonderful team in the areas of Curriculum Development and Quality Assurance. This combined portfolio will enable Carleton to fulfill its teaching and learning mission through serving our academic community in all facets of pedagogy and programmatic design.

Carleton remains ahead of the curve in exploring and supporting new programs and technologies that enable our faculty and students to teach and learn in increasingly collaborative, inclusive, accessible and engaging ways.

The Future Learning Lab and Experiential Learning Hub are at the forefront of our efforts to foster empowering, collaborative, flexible and sustainable teaching and learning.  But our ever-changing landscape requires a continued commitment to innovative thinking, strong pedagogy, experiential learning, and a willingness to embrace change as we move toward the Future of Teaching and Learning at Carleton University.

I look forward to continuing to work with you as we help our students reach their full potential, ready to engage and contribute to society, no matter what the future holds.

Professor David J Hornsby
