Carleton’s Future Learning Lab on the 4th Floor of the MacOdrum Library brings educators and students together to share, research and collaborate on innovative teaching and learning activities. The creation of the lab and the newly announced Experiential Learning Hub is largely thanks to the investment from the province’s Training Equipment and Renewal Fund which provided $2 million in funding over two rounds, matched by the university.

The Future Learning Lab is both a physical space and a set of programs designed to foster innovation and incentivize student-centred ways of teaching. In addition to fostering student and instructor partnerships, the lab encourages undergraduate research opportunities and offers innovation grants. The Lab provides student-centred physical and virtual spaces for instructors to innovate with pedagogical design, as well as enhanced individual, group and collaborative study spaces for students.

The Future Learning Lab officially launched in February 2023 and will be enhanced in October 2023 with the opening of the Experiential Learning Hub on the 6th Floor of Southam Hall. The Hub features three new spaces:

  • a Teaching Studio
  • a Creation Studio
  • a Experience Studio.

These three studios will support experiential learning through the use and the development of XR media and enhancement of Carleton’s students’ skills in new media and digital literacies.

Through the Future Learning Lab and the Experiential Learning Hub instructors will access innovative applications, experiences, hardware, tools and support provided in part by the Future Skills XR Grant in partnership with EON Reality — a provider of augmented and virtual reality-based knowledge and skills transfer for industry and education.
