Short description : This course examines the social meanings and determinants of health in post-Apartheid South Africa. It explores: popular versus “expert” (indigenous versus biomedical) concepts of health, determinants of health, and appropriate healthcare; the legacy of racialized health policies and services during Apartheid; contemporary challenges in delivering adequate healthcare; and citizen-led struggles to improve access to preventive and curative medicine, HIV-AIDS treatment and women’s reproductive health. The course will provide classroom and experiential learning opportunities for students to examine the political-economic histories of South Africa and current policy, political and economic conditions shaping citizens’ understanding, expectations, and experiences related to health and healthcare
