About the Position:

The Institute of African Studies (IAS) invites applications from qualified candidates in any of the Social Sciences or History for a tenure-track appointment in African Studies at the rank of Assistant Professor beginning July 1st, 2021. We are particularly – though not exclusively – interested in candidates with expertise in North Africa, East Africa or the Great Lakes Region. We also seek applications from candidates whose work engages with cutting-edge debates in historiography and political thought on the continent.

The successful candidate will be expected to teach courses at the undergraduate and graduate levels, including large foundational courses. We seek a dynamic and creative colleague to contribute to the development of a collaborative doctoral program. Preferred candidates will complement and/or expand our existing teaching and research strengths, and will contribute to the development of the Institute’s intellectual mission as a national and international intellectual hub for the study of Africa. The candidate will also be encouraged to develop opportunities for our undergraduate and graduate students to engage in experiential learning (through a study abroad course, for example). The successful applicant will also be expected to contribute effectively to graduate supervision, undergraduate and graduate teaching, and academic self-governance in the Institute. The ideal candidate will bring energy to the development of the Institute’s various activities that extend beyond the classroom, such as engagement with community organizations, the diplomatic corps, governmental and non-governmental agencies.
