The Institute of African Studies Student Association (IASSA), The Sociology and Anthropology Student Association (SASA), the Department of Sociology and Anthropology, Institute of African Studies, the Film Studies program of Carleton University and the South African Film Festival Canada (SAFF Canada) are pleased to present:

Student Activism in Canada and South Africa: Discussing The Art of Fallism

Join the virtual discussion of the South African/Norwegian documentary, The Art of Fallism (2019), that teases out the nuanced, yet deeply complex stories of the student struggles in South Africa built around #RhodesMustFall and #FeesMustFall, which reawakened a vibrant history of South African student protest movements and propelled political art practices, under the banner of “Fallism,” to push the limits of critical thought. This space will hold a lively discussion of the film itself with the film producers and a group of student activists and leaders from Carleton University, where they will discuss the film’s resonances and dissonances on current student struggles in Canada.

Discussants:

Wisaal Abrahams, Producer
Ingvild Aagedal Skage, Producer
Aboubakar Sanogo, Associate Professor, Film Studies (cross-appointed with African Studies)
Jayani Srigouranga, BA Honours Anthropology, Minors in African Studies & ASL, SASA Co-Chair (Anthropology)
