Collaborative PhD Program
The Collaborative PhD with a Specialization in African Studies is available to new and returning students who have been admitted to a participating program. The PhD is also available via a via a fast-track pathway to graduates of the collaborative MA program. Credits from required AFRI courses could be counted among the electives in most participating programs. Dissertation will be on an African Studies topic and will be supervised by a faculty member with expertise in Africa and Africa related research in the primary unit. It may also be co-supervised by an IAS faculty member.
Students in the collaborative Ph.D. program are required to complete the following courses;
- AFRI 5000, 0.5 Credits, African Studies as a Discipline: Historical and Oral Perspectives.
- AFRI 5800, 0.0 Credits, Scholarly Preparation in African Studies: This course requires students to participate actively in some of the many public events concerning Africa at Carleton and to present some of their work among peers.
- AFRI 6000, 0.5 Credits, Thinking from Africa: Historical Perspectives, Contemporary Dimensions
Collaborative Masters Program
All students in the collaborative program need to take:
- AFRI 5000, 0.5 Credits, African Studies as a Discipline: Historical and Oral Perspectives.
- AFRI 5800, 0.0 Credits, Scholarly Preparation in African Studies: This course requires students to participate actively in some of the many public events concerning Africa at Carleton and to present some of their work among peers.
Students choosing either the thesis or research paper options must choose a topic related to African Studies. Students choosing the coursework option must choose a number of Africa-related elective courses, as designated by their home unit.
