Study Abroad Course,  May  04 -15,  2026

NAIROBI- Kenya

 The study abroad course (AFRI 3100 or AFRI 5100) allows students study a selected topic in African Studies with a Carleton professor in an African country (or countries) in which the professor carries out research. The students also learn from experts on the topic in the African country (or countries). This is an experiential learning course that utilizes a blend of in class seminar, field visits, guest instructors, and other practical methods of delivering the content. The course focuses on a selected topic in the instructor’s area of research and examines current issues within the Country of study, the Continent and the World at large.

The course is open to African Studies Majors, Minors graduate students and other interested students in 3rd year standing.

In 2026, Prof. Nduka Otiono, director of Institute of African Studies will direct the course.

Title: Social Movements, Technological Innovation, and Youth Agency in Africa.

Host Institution: School of Communication, Day Star University, Nairobi, Kenya

Note: Carleton university will cover accommodation, local travel in Kenya, meals during special outings or tours. Our students will be responsible for tuition to Carleton University, international travel, visas, insurance, vaccinations, everyday meals, and all incidental costs,

Course focus 

This two-week study abroad course, hosted by Daystar University, immerses students in Nairobi’s dynamic landscape of youth activism, digital innovation, and social change.
It examines how young Africans are reshaping their societies through social movements, technological creativity, and entrepreneurial agency, situating Kenya as a key case study of Africa’s “innovation generation.”

By combining classroom seminars at Daystar University with field visits, community dialogue, and cultural experiences—including a Safari tour—students gain firsthand understanding of how youth-led initiatives drive transformation across social, political, and technological spheres.

Open to Undergraduate and Graduate Students

In order to register, you will first need to submit a statement of interest that includes your name, program, year of study, any related courses on Africa you have taken, and why you would like to enroll in this course to africanstudies@cunet.carleton.ca  by October 30 2025.

Carleton Courses Taught Abroad – Necessary Documents

Travel Registry

All students going abroad must complete the Travel Registry on Carleton Central before travelling abroad. The steps are as follows:

  • Log into Carleton Central
  • Select Travel Registry under the Personal Information tab in the Main Menu
  • Once in the Travel Registry function, select Add Travel Record
  • In the Travel Information portion, enter in your departure and arrival dates
  • In the Reason for my travel drop-down menu, select BGInS IER
  • The five IER options will then appear in a new drop-down menu; select your chosen option
  • Enter the remaining information in the Travel Contact Information
  • Click submit once all information is entered

Required Documentation

Once students have submitted their information in the Travel Registry, they are then able to upload required supporting documentation. Students will not be permitted to travel without complete and accurate submission of required documentation. It is not possible to upload the documentation prior to completing the Travel Registry. You will be redirected to the document upload page once you have submitted your travel record. All documents have to be in PDF format, and no larger than 2MB in size.

  • Step 1: For each document, select the type, select the file from the source on your device and then upload the document
  • Step 2: You will be able to review the documents for completion and accuracy before finalizing them to the Document Management System

All students participating in a Carleton Course Taught Abroad must fill out and complete the forms listed below.

    1. Consent to Publish
    2. Course Contract
    3. Health Form
    4. Informed Consent
    5. Passport and Visa Form
    6. Proof of Insurance Form

In addition, all students participating in a Carleton Course Taught Abroad must register in the appropriate Carleton course.
