National Research Council Canada’s Indigenous Student Employment Program

The National Research Council Canada (NRC) offers the Indigenous Student Employment Program, which provides Indigenous students with paid work terms. This program aims to empower students by providing hands-on experience in research and development fields. Students can gain practical skills, participate in groundbreaking research projects and build a professional network. The program is designed to be flexible to accommodate academic schedules and remote work opportunities are available.

Indigenous Graduate Student Entrance Award

The Indigenous Graduate Student Entrance Award is awarded by the Vice-Provost (Graduate Studies) to Indigenous peoples in Canada (First Nation, Metis or Inuit) who are full-time students entering into a Master’s or Doctoral graduate program. Qualifying recipients will be selected based on demonstrated financial need and/or academic merit.

Students can apply online through Carleton Central under Awards and Financial Assistance, Graduate Online Application Forms and search by Term: Fall 2024 and award name. Proof of Indigenous identity documentation must be provided and should be uploaded in the application as a supporting letter. To ensure consideration for this award, please apply by September 1, 2024. (Please note that any budget information should be for a one-year period.)

New Sun Graduate Bursaries

The New Sun Graduate Bursaries are for Indigenous graduate students demonstrating financial need. They support students in fields such as Indigenous governance, public administration, social work, architecture and environmental studies. MINDS Master’s Scholarships for Indigenous Students

The Department of National Defence (DND) has partnered with the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC) to deliver the Mobilizing Insights in Defence and Security (MINDS) scholarship initiative. The MINDS program is committed to fostering the next generation of security and defence scholars in the Canadian academic community and to encouraging a strong Canadian knowledge base in contemporary defence and security issues.

The MINDS Master’s Scholarships for Indigenous Students, valued at $17,500, are award supplements offered to successful Canada Graduate Scholarship—Masters (CGS M) applicants who self-identify as Indigenous and whose studies relate to defence and security.

Interested students must apply via the CGS M application form and complete the MINDS supplement module, which includes a personal statement and a statement of thematic relevance. To apply, see the MINDS program description.

Carleton University Graduate Awards: Carleton offers a variety of funding opportunities to our students. As a new or current graduate student, there are a number of internal, external and special awards that you can apply for.

Realise Seed Grant (Pilot)

The 2023 Realise Seed Grant program at Carleton aims to support early-stage research projects that demonstrate strong potential for future external funding. This initiative is designed to foster innovative and interdisciplinary research by providing seed funding to Carleton’s faculty members. Successful applicants receive financial support to help launch their research endeavors, develop their ideas and gather preliminary data.

CU SSHRC Exchange Grant

The CU SSHRC Exchange Grant program provides funding to support research activities that align with the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC) mandates. This grant aims to facilitate knowledge exchange, foster collaboration and support activities that contribute to the dissemination and application of research findings. Faculty members can apply for funding to cover costs associated with conferences, workshops and other scholarly activities that promote research engagement.
