Indigenous Artificial Intelligence (AI) refers to AI systems that are developed based on Indigenous ways of knowing. Indigenous epistemologies and theories of knowledge contain rich and robust conceptual frameworks that can develop and integrate new practical approaches in AI research and development.

Researchers are encouraged to collaborate with Indigenous communities in developing AI technology guided by Indigenous methods, data principles, and communities’ protocols and strategies. Developing Indigenous AI technology must be substantiated and founded to benefit and advance Indigenous communities. Carleton University and researchers should acknowledge the Indigenous ownership of such AI technology.
