Did you realize that there are songs that you’re listening to that help teach important lessons about financial responsibility? Here are 4 songs that teach important financial lessons:

Save Dat Money – Lil Dicky

The first piece of advice comes right in the name of the song. While it’s fun to spend money on things you enjoy, don’t underestimate the importance of saving. Whether it’s for a trip with your friends or for an emergency, your future self will thank you for setting that money aside. Try setting up an automatic transfer every month from your chequing to your savings account, and if you have a part-time job then line up the automatic transfer with the day you get paid. Even if it’s small like $5 or $10 a month, getting into the habit of saving money early will help you throughout your life.

(The song also mentions using single ply toilet paper, so if you’re really hardcore then there’s that option)

Thrift Shop – Macklemore

Another song where the action is right in the name. Thrift shopping is a great way to save money and also help the environment. You might need to do some digging, but you can find brand names and unique items at the thrift store to help define your style. You can also buy furniture at some stores, and with a little bit of paint those items can look brand new! Some thrift stores also work to support local charities in your area. It’s a win-win-win: low prices for you, better for the environment, and helping local communities. So go ahead, rock that all pink with gator shoes look.

She Works Hard for the Money – Donna Summers

We’re blasting back to the days of neon colours and leg warmers. This 1983 hit talks about working hard for the money, and it can be a great financial lesson as well. A part-time job can be a great way to make a little extra money during your time in school (just make sure that it doesn’t interfere with your school work!). If you work a part-time job, you can put a little bit extra towards savings, do more fun things with your friends, and get valuable work-experience for when you’re done school. If your school schedule allows it, go get a head start on making some sweet, sweet cash.

Sia teaches us that there are many fun things you can do without having to spend a lot of money. Check out a list of some things we’ve found:

  • There are many clubs and activities that you can do at Carleton that don’t cost much money (some are even free). Check out our list of clubs.
  • Did you know that there are certain times that you can visit museums for free? Although it’s normally during the week, there are many museums in Ottawa that have free visit times. If there’s one that you’re interested in checking out, go on their website to see what times you can go free of charge.
  • The Rideau Canal is quite close to campus, it’s a great place to walk along the path or skate if you have your own pair! Not only is it free, but it’s also good exercise. Just make sure to wear something warm.
