Awards for Students with Disabilities

Awarded annually to one or more blind or visually impaired students. The eligible student(s) must be registered with the Paul Menton Centre; must complete the Carleton University bursary application; be in good academic standing; and able to demonstrate through a brief submission, how this bursary, if awarded, would assist them in furthering the goals of Canadian Council of the Blind within the Carleton community. Eligible recipients must demonstrate financial need, must be Canadian Citizens or permanent residents of Canada (landed immigrant or a protected person), and must meet the OSAP Ontario Residency requirements. Awarded annually on the recommendation of the Director of the Paul Menton Centre, to undergraduate students with a permanent physical disability who are in demonstrated financial need and are continuing from one year to another in any program of full or part time study at Carleton University. Preference will be given to students pursuing a degree within the Faculty of Engineering and Design. Eligible recipients must be must be Canadian Citizens or permanent residents of Canada (landed immigrant or a protected person), be registered with the Paul Menton Centre. Application is required. Awarded annually, when merited, to a student in good standing enrolled in a program at Carleton University, University of Ottawa, La Cite Collegiale or Algonquin College who has made a significant contribution toward awareness, equality and integration of persons with disabilities within their educational community. The recipient will be chosen on the recommendation of the Assistant Director (Special Needs), Counselling & Student Life Services at Carleton University, assisted by a Selection Committee. Endowed in 1992 by students, family and friends of Dr. John Davis Burton, who was a champion and advocate for persons with disabilities throughout his career as an educator.

Awarded annually to deserving students proceeding from one year to another. Two students (for a total of 10 students per year) will be selected from each of the following areas; College of Humanities, Human Rights, Electronics – doing research work in the area of silicon-based optical sensors, the Attendants Service Program, and students with disabilities registered with the Paul Menton Centre. Recipients will have demonstrated financial need, must be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident of Canada (landed immigrant or protected person), and must meet OSAP’s Ontario residency requirements. Should a recipient be a graduate student, the bursary will be awarded by the Dean of the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Affairs. Endowed in 2008 by Ed Ireland. Revised 2009. Revised 2011. Awarded annually on the recommendation of the Director of the Paul Menton Centre to students with a permanent physical disability who are in demonstrated financial need and are entering or continuing in any program of study at Carleton University. Awarded annually on the recommendation of the Paul Menton Centre to an outstanding student entering or proceeding from one year to another at Carleton University who is in demonstrated financial need. Eligible students will have a permanent mental or physical disability and be registered with the Paul Menton Centre. Established in 2015 by the IODE Lord Dundonald Chapter.

Awarded annually on the recommendation of the Director of the Paul Menton Centre for Students with Disabilities, to students in financial need. Recipients will demonstrate extraordinary dedication in assisting the Paul Menton Centre in providing services to students with disabilities. Endowed in 2016 in memory of Janice Elliott, a Carleton staff member for 27 years. This bursary is inspired by her service to the university, its students and her wonderful sense of humour.

Awarded annually, on the recommendation of the Paul Menton Centre, to a student with a Learning Disability proceeding from one year to another who has been involved in student life and is a Canadian citizen. Preference will be given to a student enrolled in the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences. Endowed in 2000 by family and friends of Jonathan Brant Teuscher, B.A. 1999. While at Carleton, John touched the lives of many students in his capacity as a volunteer and active participant in student affairs.

Value $5,000. Awarded on the recommendation of the Director of the Paul Menton Centre, to outstanding students with a documented permanent physical disability entering a program of study on a full time basis within the Faculty of Engineering, the Faculty of Science, the Arthur Kroeger College of Public Affairs or the Bachelor of Commerce program. Recipients will demonstrate academic excellence, community service, leadership and commitment to making a difference in their larger communities. Application is required. The award may be continued for three consecutive years of undergraduate study provided the recipient maintains full-time enrolment (minimum of 4.0 credits over the Fall/Winter session) in an eligible undergraduate degree program and remains in good academic standing. Awarded annually, to deserving undergraduate students entering or proceeding from one year to another of any program, to support students with disabilities in the attendant services program at Carleton University. Recipients will have demonstrated financial need, must be Canadian citizens or permanent residents of Canada (landed immigrants or protected persons), and must meet OSAP’s Ontario residency requirements. A committee determined by the Awards Office and the Paul Menton Centre will select the recipients of the award. Endowed in 2007 by family and friends of Nicholas Leroux.

Awarded annually on the recommendation of the Paul Menton Centre to an outstanding undergraduate student entering or proceeding from one year to another at Carleton University. Eligible students will have a permanent disability and be registered with the Paul Menton Centre and must be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident of Canada. Preference will be given to a female student. Established by CFUW-Ottawa Club at the request of Fran Harding and funded through generous donations from Fran and other CFUW-Ottawa Club members. It is named in honour of Susan Scott Parker, a Canadian, who is an advocate for the rights of disabled persons in the United Kingdom. Revised 2017.

Valued at $3,000, the purpose of this scholarship is to provide financial support to an undergraduate student with a permanent disability who is starting their first year of study or proceeding from one year to another in any program of study at Carleton University. The award will be granted annually, on the recommendation of the Paul Menton Centre and an application by the student will be required. Eligible recipients will be Canadian citizens.

Awarded on the recommendation of the Director of the Paul Menton Centre, to three outstanding undergraduate students with a demonstrated permanent disability who are enrolled in any program of study at Carleton University. Eligible students will be Canadian citizens. Preference will be given to students in financial need. This scholarship may be renewable for up to 3 consecutive years of full-time enrolment at a value of $6,000 per year. Established in 2019 by the Walker Wood Foundation. Revised 2023.

Awarded annually to two deserving undergraduate students in the final year of any program of study who are registered with the Paul Menton Centre. Recipients will have demonstrated financial need, must be Canadian citizens or permanent residents of Canada (landed immigrants or protected persons), and must meet OSAP’s Ontario residency requirements. Endowed in 2007 from the estate of Mrs. Sarah Lithwick Green.

Awarded annually to a student with a continuing physical disability entering a full-time program at Carleton University from an Ottawa high school who is in need of financial assistance. Established in 2017 through the Ottawa Community Foundation.

• To be considered for the Ingram, McCarthy, Robertson Aw Bursary, students must complete the online General Undergraduate Bursary application by the Oct. 31 deadline.

Awarded annually to undergraduate students with a documented permanent disability who are enrolled in a degree program at Carleton University. Eligible students will be in demonstrated financial need and must be registered with the Paul Menton Centre. Endowed in 2019 by Dr. Larry Didow, PhD/72. Dr. Larry Didow obtained his PhD at Carleton University in 1972 and went on to become a professor at the University of Winnipeg. During his tenure at the University, he was very active in the development of the Nathan McKay Learning Resource Centre for Students with Disabilities (now referred to as the Disability Services and Resource Centre) and he currently supports disabled students through several scholarships and/or bursaries at post secondary institutions.

Endowed 1990 by family and friends in memory of Paul Menton, Carleton University’s first co-ordinator of disabled programs.
