Commentary (January 2009) by Patrick Leblond, University of Ottawa

English Version

Ten years ago, on January 1, 1999, eleven European Union (EU) Member States signed up to a single currency, the euro. The decision to create a single currency in Europe was made in 1993 with the signing of the Maastricht treaty. This commentary looks at the development of the Eurozone and the effects of a single currency on trade and growth in the European Union.
