The Centre for European and Transition Studies at the University of Latvia (LU CETS)

Since 2000, the Centre for European and Transition Studies (LU CETS), a structure of the University of Latvia (LU), is engaged in inter-disciplinary research and teaching regarding European issues in economics, political science, law, public administration and regional science. CETS is recognised internationally as an innovator in interdisciplinary studies in the Baltic States. CETS contributes to projects funded by the EU programmes, H2020, ERASMUS+, Baltic Sea Region programme; and supports activities of a Doctoral School European Integration and Baltic Sea Region Studies that includes research on EU-Russia socio-economic relations. Since 2011 CETS has hosted a Jean Monnet Centre of Excellence “Eastern Partnership in a Global Environment: Sharing European Excellence in Inter-Disciplinary Research and Teaching”. CETS attracts young scholars from the Eastern Partnership and European Neighbourhood Policy countries for shared experiences on EU integration.

Within the Jean Monnet Canada-EU Network, CETS will participate in student and staff exchanges as well as organize workshops. It will host incoming Canadian M.A. students, as well as Ph.D. researchers, wishing to benefit from intellectual exchange with the University of Latvia and CETS as by geography, EU membership and regional anchoring CETS provides a natural bridge between EU and its ‘ring of friends’. CETS will organize a workshop “Towards a common EU and Canadian approach to Russia” in 2019.
