After almost two years of negotiation on a Canada-EU Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA) the parties are hopeful that an agreement will be concluded later in 2011. The CETA has been controversial – mainly in Canada – because of its possible inhibiting effect on future Canadian regulation of the extraction of petroleum from oil sands. This commentary analyses the provisions of CETA in terms of environment standards and how this might affect policies relating to companies working in the oil sector in Canada.
