Like all other research awards, your NSERC/SSHRC account will be deactivated immediately after the end of use of funds period i.e. the last day of the last year of spending or any applicable extension year.
For SSHRC and NSERC programs, if an extension is not approved by SSHRC/NSERC and you have spent at least 50% of the total original research grant amount, you can request within three months of the end of your use of funds date continued access to 50% of the unspent funds for up to twelve months through Carleton’s General Research Fund (GRF). The request must be fully justified in terms of an ongoing research program or new initiative, including providing a budget breakdown and timeline duration of no more than twelve months.
As stated in the Tri Council Residual Balances policy, (for NSERC and SSHRC only) any funds remaining at the end of the research grant or applicable extension year will be transferred to the University’s General Research Fund pending notification from the agency. The university may use these funds for the “broad purpose of enhancing the quality of research in the natural sciences and engineering, or in the social sciences and humanities”, including internal programs in these areas of research. (Any funds remaining at the end of the research grant or applicable extension year for CIHR funds must be returned to the agency.)
The university is required to spend at least 50% of the total opening balance of its GRF fund each year. To ensure compliance, CORIS has implemented the following procedures for the management of NSERC and SSHRC residual funds:
Step 1 – The Research Post-Award (RPA) Team will notify you via email of the end of your use of funds.
Step 2 – Request an extension from SSHRC/NSERC via RPA Team up to six months prior to the end date of the use of funds
If extension is not approved
Step 3 – Submit a request for up to 50% of the residual balance
- Request may be to support ongoing research program or new initiatives.
- Submission deadline: Requests can be made starting six months prior to the end of the use of funds up until three months after the fund expired. No extensions will be granted.
- Funding Period: Any activities and expenditures must be completed within a maximum of one year of award. No extensions will be granted.
Requests will be reviewed by Office of the Vice-President Research and International on a case-by-case basis.
