Data, Algorithms, and Social Activism
Tracey Lauriault, Sandra Robinson, and Merlyna Lim
Data studies is an emerging domain of critical inquiry in communication and media studies, digital humanities, sociology, geography, and a number of other disciplines.
Data studies encompass closely related studies in algorithm, code, software, and digital platforms. Data studies scholars examine the sociotechnical relations of data and power, data assemblages, data as discourse, and data politics and culture.
In this Data Science Institute Lecture, Lauriault, Robinson and Lim introduce their research approaches and the types of questions they pursue, showcasing examples of their work to foreground where data studies and data science intersect, and situating data technologies and data in contexts to assess its contingent, non-determinative role and impacts in society.
Please note that photos or video may be taken at the event which may later be used in print and online media produced by the Institute for Data Science at Carleton University. For any questions or concerns, please contact Kathryn Elliott (kathryn.elliott@carleton.ca).
