Those were two of the comments from the more than 60 newly elected Members of Parliament who attended the two day orientation organized by the Carleton Initiative for Parliamentary and Diplomatic Engagement.
On January 19, 2016, the new MPs met at the Shaw Centre for an introduction to Ottawa and the National Capital Region, including brunch with the mayors of Ottawa and Gatineau, representatives from the National Capital Commission, our federal cultural institutions and special guests. They toured the Supreme Court and engaged in discussion with Justice Rosalie Abella on the role and work of the Supreme Court. From there, they went to Rideau Hall for a discussion with HIs Excellency David Johnston on the role of the Governor General. They toured Rideau Hall and learned about honours, heraldry and services to constituents. The day ended with a reception at Earnscliffe, home of Sir John A. Macdonald, hosted by British High Commissioner Howard Drake.
On January 20, 2016, the new MPs met at the Sir John A. Macdonald for sessions on How Ottawa Works; How to Work Effectively in Ottawa; and Canada – Challenges and Opportunities. Nationally-regarded Canadians, including former parliamentarians, heads of national organizations, individuals who worked at the most senior levels of government and distinguished Carleton professors, offered thought-provoking panels and briefings.
The orientation complemented the House of Commons procedural and administrative orientation and was supported by the House of Commons leadership and all three political parties.
