Dear 2021 graduates,

I met many of you in my courses during the last half decade and could certainly not have foreseen how your undergraduate years would come to a close. Life is unpredictable. It is sometimes terrible and, for many in this world, it is too often awful.

You have been schooled in the tools of language but also in the instruments of critical thought. You’ve thought about injustice and how it’s perpetuated in and through words, as well as in and through the systems and structures that bring us new words each day, each moment. We need your hard work in this world; we need your courage.

Congratulations to you all. Onward!

Jody Mason
