As news of unmarked graves on the former sites of Canadian residential schools continues to emerge, the Department of English expresses its grief over this latest evidence of Canada’s genocidal treatment of Indigenous peoples. Going forward, we will continue to take direction from Indigenous leaders, scholars and writers on ways to engage our responsibilities to this history and its intergenerational consequences.

For those seeking materials related to residential schools and their histories, there are some excellent resources on the “Reports” section of the National Truth and Reconciliation Commission website and the University of Regina’s Shattering the Silence website.
