This year, two members from the Faculty of Public Affairs were among the recipients of the Carleton University Research Achievement Awards.

Administered by the Office of the Vice-President (Research and International), the awards were established in 1989 to recognize outstanding achievements in research.

Doris Buss, a Professor in the Department of Law and Legal Studies, won with her research project that looks at women working in artisanal and small-scale mining (ASM) in sub-Saharan Africa.

Building on existing research, her work considers the effects of new mining sustainable development initiatives and gender mainstreaming as it unfolds within transnational policy initiatives on resource extraction.

As a recipient of the Research Achievement Award, Buss is grateful for the opportunity to extend her research.

“With this award, I and my research partners in Africa and Canada are able to take our ongoing, multi-year collaboration to the next level,” says Buss.

“With this support, we can extend our work to exploring the impact of environmental regulation on women miners, and to working closely with policymakers to translate years of research into meaningful policy.”

Hashmat Khan

Hashmat Khan, Chair in the Department of Economics, received the Research Achievement Award for his project proposal on Macroeconomic Stability.

Khan’s work involves the development of a framework to assess two opposing views on the roles of monetary policy actions and the Inflation Environment.

Khan says he is happy and honoured to receive the award, and he sees it as having a positive effect on his work:

“Research is a joyful and often bumpy endeavour. This recognition will inspire me to continue to enhance my work.”
