Bagels and Banter is a monthly opportunity to discuss shared research and teaching and learning topics with faculty members in a relaxed setting. Learn about new topics, teaching methods and potential research collaborations.

In 2001 the Supreme Court of Canada carved out a “private use exception” to Canada’s child pornography laws. Simply put, the exception sought to prevent the unconstitutional criminalization of teens as “child pornographers” for creating and sharing their sexual images (in a narrowly defined context). This decision preceded the creation of web 2.0, wireless networking, and smart phones. It’s unlikely that the Court could  have predicted the ways in which digital technology would alter sexual, communication, and privacy norms. Please join Lara Karaian to discuss how digital technology shifted these key normative frames, how courts have interpreted the exception since its inception,  And, what the criminal and constitutional implications are of this for young people and adults in 2017. These are just some of the questions Lara explores.

Bagels and Banter is open to all faculty members. Faculty members are encouraged to bring their senior graduate students along.
