More Information

Almost a decade following the 2007-08 global economic crisis, growth remains stagnant, inequality is increasing, and multiple forms of exclusion and discrimination remain in place. In response, a series of leaders have emerged in Western Europe and the United States, presenting racist and xenophobic policy responses.

To help confront this situation, the Institute of Political Economy has organized a conference “Political Economy: Old Challenges, New Responses.” The conference will provide an opportunity to think critically about the past contributions of the study of political economy, and to identify emerging themes, invisible knowledges, and forgotten actors. The objective of the event is to contribute to the development of an interdisciplinary, culturally diverse and environmentally informed discipline.

The conference will be held March 20-21, 2017, with opening speech delivered by Dr. Tania Murray Li, and closing remarks by Dr. Eric Helleiner. The conference will be followed by a one-day doctoral student workshop on March 22. Please see the conference program for a list of presenters and topics.

Join us in searching for new ways of thinking about more inclusive and equitable theoretical and policy solutions to the current financial, production, environmental, and reproduction crises that plague the global system.
