Join us for the launch of “Fierce, Fabulous and Fluid: How Trans High School Students Work at Gender Nonconformity”! This book launch will take the form of a conversation between Julia Sinclair-Palm, an Associate Professor in IIS, and LJ Slovin, the book’s author.
Based on a year-long ethnographic study conducted in a Canadian high school, “Fierce, Fabulous, and Fluid” presents a poignant critique of educational policies aimed at supporting trans and gender-nonconforming students.
LJ Slovin is the Martha LA McCain Postdoctoral Fellow at the Bonham Centre for Sexual Diversity Studies at the University of Toronto. Their work has been published in Curriculum Inquiry, Journal of LGBT Youth, Sex Education, and RERM. Slovin was a Vanier Scholar, and the 2020 recipient of the Pat Clifford Award.
Dr. Sinclair-Palm’s (she/they) research considers how conceptualizations of children and youth are tied to concerns about violence, risk, and mental health often at the exclusion of other, more complex narratives of identity, gender and belonging. She examines how young people forge new identities, imagine futures and navigate structural inequalities in the midst of these larger, and sometimes restrictive narratives about childhood and youth.
Masking is recommended.
Food will be provided.
