March 30th, 2021 CHST Event: What is Loving Justice? Embodying Transformative Change with Kai Cheng Thom
What does it mean to embody the values of social transformation and generative conflict resolution? How can activists, artists, healers, and leaders bring Transformative Justice into our everyday lives and our work with young people? Join award-winning author, trauma-informed somatic coach, and conflict resolution practitioner Kai Cheng Thom for an interactive exploration of Transformative Justice. Kai Cheng will draw from her personal and professional experience as a community worker and healer to shed light on the ways that conflict evolves in and shapes social movements. The lineage of groundbreaking BIPOC thought leaders such as adrienne maree brown, Mia Mingus, and Leah Lakshmi Piepzna-Samarasinha will be outlined, as well as Kai Cheng’s own “Loving Justice” model of embodied conflict resolution.
Following Kai Cheng’s talk, Carleton’s Childhood and Youth Studies scholar Julia Sinclair-Palm will join her in a conversation about her books From the Stars in the Sky to the Fish in the Sea (2017), Fierce Femmes and Notorious Liars: A Dangerous Trans Girl’s Confabulous Memoir (2017) and I HOPE WE CHOOSE LOVE: A Trans Girl’s Notes from the End of the World (2019). They will discuss what Transformative Justice offers for how we support and engage with young trans people.
