Newspaper readers were enthralled by the weekly dispatches of Diane King Stuemer, BJ/81, while her family sailed around the world aboard Northern Magic. For four years, Stuemer shared with Canadians her life and the lives of those she met on her journey. She died of cancer in 2003 at the age of 43.

In September 2006, the Diane King Stuemer Fellowship, an ongoing testament to her life and work, will allow a graduating Carleton University student to spend one year working for the Ottawa Citizen.

The salaried fellowship gives a year’s worth of reporting and writing experience to a student with the desire to launch a career in print journalism and a record of academic excellence. Emphasis will be placed on assignments that explore international issues, particularly those that investigate ways in which journalism can be applied to public service, philanthropic or educational purposes.
