Research Interests
My research interests are in cognitive development. In general, I am interested in individual differences that are related to the performance of complex skills, specifically, mathematics. Current students are studying topics on the type of mental codes used by children to solve mathematical problems, the role of working memory in mathematics, the role of home numeracy experiences in children’s early mathematical development in various countries, and the role of spatial processes in mathematics at different ages. Applied questions, such as “What should parents do at home to help their children learn mathematics?” or “Why do some people find arithmetic harder than other people?” help to frame and focus my basic research.
